Soul Food

Soul food comes in infinite varieties. All spiritual masters agree that “service” is one of the most delicious sources. As Maya Angelou advised, “Be a rainbow in someone else’s cloud.”
So why is service so important to the soul? As Benjamin learned in “Adventures of Benjamin the Bus,” there is nothing like the hypnotic feeling that comes over you when you help someone in need. When you become attuned to another person, your senses heighten, your vibration rises, and your “oneness” taps into the miracles of the unified field or the divine creative consciousness. No longer subject to the limiting attributes of perception (the law of relativity), alignment with the unified field ushers in infinite possibilities.
Through his breathe and intention, Benjamin miraculously lifted the biker’s Harley out of the ocean. This reminds us of what we are capable of when we are fully aligned in the present moment. In fact, many miracles have been reported in which people are overcome with unparalled strength to save others’ lives.
Beyond tapping into the unified field to manifest miracles, service work allows you to fully know yourself better. Others are mirrors to your soul. What you see when you look at another, is also what is inside of yourself. When you help others, you see their worthiness, beauty, and divinity. Service allows you to experience “oneness” with another, and ultimately, “oneness” with the infinite divine consciousness.
As a psychologist and student of life, one of my favorite past times is taking Uber and Lyft rides and getting to know my drivers. I am fortunate to live in a city where many of the drivers have creative aspirations in the TV, Film, or Music industries on the side. I hear some of the most amazing stories of hard work, perseverance, and heartbreak.
My favorite story was my humble Lyft driver that was a very famous pop singer in South Korea, but virtually unknown in the United States. He played his incredible CD for me as he drove me across town. I made him smile and brightened his day, and he gave me the gift of inspiration to never stop pursuing my dreams. By the time the ride was over, I felt like I just had the most decadent meal of soul food one could ever imagine!
So the next time you are hungry for some soul food, go be of service. Our world needs it more than ever and you probably need it to!
